The Origins of Veterans Day
The roots of Veterans Day trace back to the end of World War I, a conflict so devastating it was once called “the war to end all wars.” Fighting ceased with the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday was established in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilsonto honor those who fought in World War I. After World War II and the Korean War, the observance was expanded to honor all American veterans, and in 1954, it officially became Veterans Day under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
