The Junior Leadership Battalion Cadet

The Junior Leadership Battalion Cadet (JLBC) Corps is committed to instilling discipline, leadership, teamwork, and respect. One of the central tenets of their training is respect for the flag. The flag symbolizes not just a piece of fabric but a representation of unity, freedom, and history, a history that includes countless sacrifices made for the principles it stands for. The JLBC Cadet Corps' flag etiquette underlines the importance of respecting this national symbol.

The corps trains cadets in all aspects of flag etiquette. One includes learning the correct method to hoist and lower the flag, ensuring it is never allowed to touch the ground. Each movement symbolizes respect and reverence for the flag, expressing a commitment to its ideals.

The corps also imparts training on the proper procedures that involve the flag. For instance, cadets are taught to stand at attention when the National Anthem is played or "To the Colors" is sounded. The salute begins with the first note of the anthem and is held until the last notice. If the flag is not in sight, cadets face the direction of the music.

Cadets learn to show respect when in civilian clothes by standing at attention and placing the right hand over the heart. For males, this involves removing the hat and holding it in the right hand while the right hand is placed over the heart. Women do not remove their caps.

Respect for the flag extends to how it is treated in various scenarios. For example, the flag should never be used as a drapery, an article of clothing, or a covering. It should never bear any kind of lettering or be used for advertising. It is a symbol of national pride and identity, and using it in a manner not befitting its stature is discouraged.

In the Junior Leadership Battalion Cadet Corps, respect for the flag is seen as a way of showing reverence for the nation and its values. It is a commitment to uphold the principles the government was built upon, including liberty, justice, and the pursuit of truth.

In conclusion, the JLBC Cadet Corps profoundly understands the importance of the American flag and what it represents. By instilling this respect in young cadets, they are educating them about the protocols of flag etiquette and fostering a deep-seated appreciation for their nation and its guiding principles. This respect for the flag learned and displayed in the formative years will undoubtedly help them grow into responsible, respectful, and patriotic citizens.
