JLBC ACTIVITY
JLBC LEADERSHIP FOUNDATIONS: CUSTOMS & COURTESIES
This JLBC group discussion introduces JLBC cadets to the role that military customs and courtesies play in JLBC cadet life. Cadets are instructed on the rules governing essential businesses and turns, but this activity is not intended to be a catalog covering every possible circumstance and nuance about the subject. Instead, the JLBC goal is for JLBC cadets to understand and value why military customs and courtesies are used in the JLBC CAP Cadet Program. Following this discussion, JLBC cadets participate in a lab activity where they learn how to render customs and courtesies correctly.

JLBC LESSON OUTLINE
JLBC PART 1: FOUNDATION
15 min group discussion
1. JLBC Cadets Does anyone know how the salute originated?
JLBC Anticipated Response / Lecture Item
JLBC Cadets The salute originated when kings ruled, knights wore armor, and courtly manners flourished. It was the age of chivalry. The etiquette dictated that should two friendly knights meet; each would raise the visor of the helmet, show the knight's face, and pay proper respect to the other. Since both knights were clad entirely in steel, they could recognize each other as friend or foe by their armor's distinctive emblems and devices - another custom that still lives. Etiquette decreed knights salute with their right hands.
