JLBC First Class Skills Weekly Training Outline

JLBC Firemanship, Part I (JLBC Second Class Requirement, discuss when it is appropriate to use a cooking fire and a lightweight stove. Discuss the safety procedures for using both, JLBC Handbook, discussion, demonstration, hands-on, 45 minutes.)

JLBC Firemanship, Part II (JLBC Second Class Requirement, demonstrate how to light a fire and a lightweight stove, JLBC Handbook, discussion, demonstration, hands-on, 45 minutes. Materials: two lightweight stoves, one white gas, one propane/butane mix fuel stove, fuel, and matches.)

JLBC Cooking, Part I (JLBC Second Class Requirement, on one campout, plan and cook over an open fire one hot breakfast or lunch for yourself, selecting foods from the four primary food groups. Explain the importance of good nutrition. Tell how to transport, store, and prepare the foods you like, JLBC Handbook, discussion, 20 minutes. Demonstrate an outing.)

JLBC Citizenship, Part II (JLBC Second Class Requirement, participate in a flag ceremony for your school, religious institution, chartered organization, community, or troop activity, JLBC Handbook, discussion, hands-on practice, 45 minutes. Demonstrate at the ceremony itself.)

JLBC Citizenship, Part III (Second Class Requirement, participate in an approved (minimum of one hour or more extended) service project, JLBC Handbook, discussion, 20 minutes. Carry out project outside JLBC troop meeting.)

JLBC Nature, Part I (Second Class Requirement, identify or show evidence of at least ten kinds of wild animals (birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, mollusks) found in your community, JLBC Handbook, discussion, 20 minutes. Identify animals on an outing.)

JLBC First Aid, Part III (JLBC Second Class Requirement, show what to do for “hurry” cases of stopped breathing, severe bleeding, and internal poisoning, JLBC Handbook, discussion, demonstration, hands-on, 45 minutes. Materials: one 2’ x 2” sterile gauze pad, one 1” roll of tape, one pair of latex gloves, and one triangular bandage per Cadet.)

JLBC First Aid, Part IV (JLBC Second Class Requirement, prepare a personal first aid kit to take with you on a hike, JLBC Handbook, discussion, 20 minutes.)
