JLBC Cadet Corps Partnership


In an innovative move designed to foster environmental responsibility and career discovery, the JLBC Cadet Corps has recently partnered with the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) and the Career Discovery Internship Program (CDIP).


The JLBC Cadet Corps is a well-established organization that focuses on molding young cadets into responsible citizens through many learning opportunities. This latest initiative is a solid testament to the organization's commitment to broaden the horizons of its cadets.


The partnership with YCC provides the cadets with summer employment opportunities that engage them in meaningful conservation work on public lands. These experiences instill an environmental stewardship ethic in the cadets and expose them to potential career paths in the conservation sector. The 8 to 10 weeks program effectively balances work and education, promoting civic responsibility alongside hands-on experience.


In collaboration with CDIP, the JLBC Cadet Corps introduces culturally and ethnically diverse college cadets to conservation careers within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The objective here is three-fold: to familiarize the cadets with the sector, to give field staff the experience of working with a diverse workforce, and to increase diversity in the applicant pool for conservation-based jobs. The CDIP partnership offers valuable hands-on experiences for cadets in conservation. They receive a week-long training and orientation program, during which they engage in simulations and challenges that provide insight into the reality of working in the field.


Throughout the summer, the cadets work closely with mentors from the Service, gaining invaluable insights and nurturing strong professional relationships. The program's culmination involves the interns presenting solutions to management issues commonly faced on a Service field station, such as public relations, invasive species, and resource conservation.


In the long run, this collaboration is expected to result in a more diverse, informed, and committed workforce in the conservation sector. For the JLBC Cadet Corps, this partnership solidifies their commitment to the holistic development of their cadets. This opens up a new world of career possibilities and experiences for the cadets.
