Important Points to Remember. Your best weapons are judgment, reasoning, awareness of your surroundings, and common sense. Always be aware of, and alert to your surroundings, mainly when you are at a disadvantage (unfamiliar neighborhoods, strangers, or even acquaintances, alone anywhere). Do not get into circumstances or situations that are potentially threatening or dangerous to your well-being. If you can run or escape—do it! Avoid confrontation where ever possible—you might lose! Talk your way out of any conflict if escaping is not a possibility. Talk your way out of a potential conflict may stall your attacker long enough for you to get the advantage. If possible, do not let anyone grab you. If it does happen, you must defend yourself immediately. Do not think about your defense too long – react; it may be too late. Take advantage of any object within reach that can be used as a weapon (handbag, briefcase, shopping bag, umbrella, book, keys, etc.). Also, remember that any part of your body can be used as a weapon: fingers, nails, elbows, knees, head, and teeth. If and when you counterattack with a kick, punch, or strike, you must do so with all the intensity and strength you can muster. You may only get one chance. Use your voice to draw attention attentive to yourself, call for help, or distract your adversary momentarily so that you can execute your defense. And finally, you must decide what actions to take for a given situation that will result in your survival. Know the consequences of your efforts! Using common sense to take flight or to fight is a decision that you must make for your best chance of survive
