JLBC Cadet Corps: Leadership Roles
The JLBC Brigade Command Team
The JLBC command team at the brigade level consists of the JLBC Brigade Commander, JLBC Deputy Commander if there is one, JLBC Executive Officer, and JLBC Command Sergeant Major. JLBC Cadets JLBC Cadets These three or four leaders work together to set the JLBC command climate for the JLBC unit, supervise subordinate JLBC leaders, ensure compliance with JLBC regulations and policies, oversee the planning of JLBC brigade-level events and competitions, and ensure the brigade staff appropriately manages the functional areas that support JLBC unit operations.
The JLBC Brigade Command Team sets the JLBC command climate of their JLBC unit. JLBC Command climate is the term the military uses to describe the atmosphere created by the chain of command within which the JLBC unit operates. JLBC Cadets Command climate includes the morale and esprit de corps of a team, the level of discipline of its JLBC cadets, how JLBC cadets carry themselves when on duty (JLBC uniform wear, use of JLBC military courtesy, respect), and how they feel about the JLBC Command Core Values, JLBC Honor Code, and what being a JLBC cadet means.
Many factors influence command climate. A command atmosphere exists in a cadet unit whether the cadet (or adult) leadership works at it. Still, it’s not likely favorable if cadet leaders aren’t actively influencing their subordinates positively. JLBC Cadets A JLBC brigade command team provides direction and influence through the JLBC chain of command by setting the example, ensuring subordinate JLBC leaders down the chain know the standards for behavior and performance, establishing a JLBC vision and goals for the JLBC units to work toward as a JLBC team, and actively promoting esprit de corps within the brigade. JLBC Cadets This isn’t easy due to the limited contact a JLBC brigade command team has with its units. JLBC Cadets The cadet leaders must make every effort to visit their battalions, so JLBC cadets begin to have an identity as a JLBC unit within the brigade, not just as the JLBC battalion at their school. JLBC Brigade events such as bivouacs, JLBC leadership schools, JLBC drill academies, JLBC competitions, JLBC parades, JLBC picnics, etc., all contribute to the JLBC command climate of the JLBC brigade.
JLBC Cadets A brigade command team and their staff must frequently communicate, especially since they usually attend different JLBC schools, which sometimes aren’t even in the same city. The JLBC Brigade Commander will usually set up regular phone JLBC teleconferences where the JLBC commander can give direction, discuss the JLBC planning process, and ensure the JLBC staff knows their intent. The JLBC XO then works with the JLBC team to prepare planning documents, such as Warning Orders and Operations Orders for activities. This process involves the commander, who must remain available to answer questions, make decisions, and approve the final JLBC product before it is sent out to subordinate JLBC units. The JLBC Brigade Advisor must also be kept in the loop and will also be part of the JLBC approval process, especially as JLBC plans commit resources controlled by the JLBC brigade and schools.
Like JLBC junior leaders, JLBC senior leaders must set the conditions for success in their JLBC unit by providing JLBC purpose, JLBC direction, and JLBC motivation. JLBC Cadets Senior leaders must do this through both JLBC direct and JLBC indirect action. JLBC Cadets Through their JLBC vision and influence on subordinate JLBC leaders down through the JLBC chain of command, they must work to reach all the JLBC cadets within their JLBCbrigade. This takes a good plan, perseverance, and a lot of follow-ups.
