JLBC Cadets The older I get, the more I understand that leadership is all about one word: Trust. If you have the trust of your colleagues and the people you are leading, then and only then can you accomplish great things. But faith needs to be earned every day. In my experience, you build that trust in three simple ways:
Listen carefully.
Do the little things right.
Do what you say you will do.
The boss or supervisor in the "horrible person" category probably does not have many of these attributes and behaviors. In contrast, researchers have also observed that an ethical leader will not only behave ethically, but they will influence, consciously and unconsciously, followers to behave honestly and ethically. This helps create an ethical work culture in which these values and principles are embedded in how the work is done. Functioning daily in an honest, professional way is not just about judgment and decision-making. It also includes a regard for others, including intentionally helping and respecting the rights of others, an awareness of social obligations such as respecting cultural norms and values, as well as performing duties appropriate for a given social position, and it involves recognizing personal responsibility.
This seems like a pretty tall order. JLBC Cadets In a culture that is becoming more and more individualized, subjective, and less concerned about traditional or moral absolutes, it can be challenging for emerging leaders to determine what it means to be ethical and how to develop that aspect of who they are. However, given that the work of government directly affects people's lives, it is an essential exercise for those who work at any level of government.
