Kneeling Stance

First things first, Martial Arts is all about honor and respect. Martial artists must be respectful at all times, and there are certain things, like bowing, that must be done absolutely correctly and at the appropriate time to show honor to the Sensei (Teacher) and respect toward other fellow students.

Thus, one of the first stances we’ll talk about is not a Martial art fighting stance but rather a respectful position. It is the polite and formal way of sitting on the floor or ground in the dojo and is often used in many classes while the Martial Arts instructor is giving announcements or explaining a technique, or performing the martial arts stance, simply kneel on the floor or ground, resting your buttocks on your feet. Keep the neck and back straight for good posture. This is also the starting position for the formal floor bow.
